FAQs

Southover Woods & Camping

Campsite Ranger

We usually have a campsite ranger onsite. If you need any help or assistance you can call the Ranger (07931 663130) who will help you where they can. The Ranger may sometimes be busy but leave us your contact details and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Please see our page on what3words, as this facility can help us easily locate you and direct you appropriately.

Camp fire logs

From April 2026, we will be providing camp fire logs as part of your pitch price. This means you will have logs available on your pitch when you arrive. These will be topped up during your stay by the Ranger. We believe this will be adequate for your needs. We are unable to supply any additional logs. If you think you will need additional logs, you are free to bring your own supply of logs, or purchase them locally if required. Please note that disposable BBQ are not allowed on this campsite!

Toilets

We use composting toilets on our site. The majority of our pitches have their own dedicated composting toilet. Composting toilets are a versatile, practical and sustainable solution, ideal for wild camping environments. Please don’t put anything into the composting toilet unless you have eaten it first (other than toilet paper). To aid the composting process, we encourage you to sprinkle cold ash from your fire over your waste. There should be an ash bucket on your pitch for this purpose.

Showers

Our showers are wild camping and designed to be used with warm or cold water. They can be manually tilted for use. If you’d like a warm shower, we encourage you to heat water on your firepit and fill the shower container with a mixture of cold and warm water to your preferred temperature. A kettle is provided at each pitch which can help with this.

Water Supply

There are three standpipes providing water (see the site map for their location). The water is supplied from a local bore hole. We recommend that the water is boiled, then cooled before you drink it. Each pitch has a large kettle for boiling water but we do not provide water containers for transporting water. Please bring your own containers if you think you will need one.

Access to the Campsite

The campsite is accessed via a woodland track. This is a forest route with potholes, making it unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles (e.g., certain sports cars). Please keep this in mind when planning your trip.

Safety in the Woods

Southover Woods is a wild and natural environment, home to badgers and fox dens, shake holes, fallen branches, and natural water features like puddles and ponds. While this makes the landscape beautiful and exciting, it also comes with inherent risks.

Shake/Sink Holes: These occur throughout the woods, making the terrain unpredictable.

Falling Branches: In high winds, branches can fall, posing a risk. If severe weather is forecast, we reserve the right to close the site.

Fires: Anyone lighting a fire is fully responsible for its safety and management.

Wildlife & Ticks: Deer are common in early seasons, and where there are deer, ticks may also be present, especially in long grass. For guidance on tick prevention and removal, please refer to Public Health England’s advice.

Your responsibility

By booking a pitch at Southover Woods, you accept full responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your party. Enjoy the wild beauty of the woods, but please explore with care!

Vehicle-Free Policy

To preserve the natural environment, no vehicles are allowed within Southover Woods. Please park in our designated parking area and use the provided wheelbarrows to transport your belongings to your pitch.

For those with mobility concerns, we do have a limited number of pitches accessible by vehicle. These can be arranged on a case-by-case basis, please contact us in advance to discuss your needs.

Respect for other Campers

Pitches are generally clearly marked. Please do not walk through other pitches to ensure everyone’s privacy

Keep music and noise levels low throughout the day. We ask that you do not play loud music or make excessive noise after 9pm please.

Dogs & Pets

Dogs are welcome in the woodland and wild camping areas.

Keep dogs under control and in sight at all times.

Please dispose of dog waste responsibly—bury it or leave it in thick undergrowth, not in plastic bags.

Waste & Fires

Please take your rubbish home or dispose of it at local municipal sites. There are no on-site bins.

Do not leave fires unattended without a cover. Fire pits are provided, and we rely on campers to use them responsibly.

Disposable BBQs are strictly prohibited.

During severe dry periods the Ranger may inspect pitches to ensure fire pits are not unattended when lit. We appreciate your co-operation and understanding during these checks

Woodland Pond & Child Safety

There is a deep woodland pond near the entrance to the Daydreams pitch, with steep sides in some areas.

Young children must be supervised at all times due to the risk of drowning.

Swimming in the pond is not allowed.

Severe weather warnings

We reserve the right to close the site in the event of severe weather warnings (see our booking T&C's)

This will usually relate to excessive wind warnings issued by the Met Office (Red)

In the event of a closure you will be contacted by the management team via your booking email / phone number

The Ranger will also inspect all pitches to ensure the site has been cleared

We operate Southover Woods on a trust basis, so please respect these guidelines to help us maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all campers.
